Many Italian eateries manage to be both fancy and casual at the same time, much like a necktie with Taz on it. Feel gussied up without too much fuss with today’s Groupon: for $8, you get two zazzu hot cones and sides of soup or side salad at The Mad Italian, valid at either of two Toronto locations. Choose one of the following locations:

  • College Street
  • Bayview Avenue <p>

As profiled in the Toronto Star, The Mad Italian’s owner Eli Turkienicz designed the Zazzu hot pizza cone after the popular culinary concept took off in Italy. Unlike messier triangular slices that might be mistaken for edible pie chart components, Zazzus assemble recognizable pizzeria toppings inside an easily toted crispy cone. Dining partners can debate the merits of the menus’ many hot cone varieties, such as the turkey and pesto or the Tuscan tuna crowned with both mozzarella and parmesan. Accompanying side salads marry crisp lettuces and vinaigrette in munching ceremonies that bring eaters tears of joy, and soup-of-the-day selections include choices such as minestrone and pasta fagioli. Hot cones are simple to carry out or, in mild weather, can be enjoyed on the breezy patio seating that distinguishes the Bayview location’s modern facade.

The Mad Italian

When coming up with a recipe for The Mad Italian’s gelato, the owner enlisted the help of a Italian family who had been using the same recipe for generations. A selection of more than 50 flavours includes milk-based varieties, such as dulce de leche and pumpkin pie, and an additional reserve of water-based flavours takes on fruitier variations, including blood orange and blueberry basil. In addition to scooping authentic gelato, the staff brews Caffè Haiti espresso, a 100% arabica blend imported directly from Rome.

Owner Eli Turkienicz wondered what he could add to the menu to combat the wintertime slump of gelato sales and frozen tongue syndrome. In true gelateria form, the answer came in a cone: Zazzu hot pizza cones. The savoury treats portably encase toppings such as meatballs and mozzarella or turkey and basil pesto. The cooks also whip up a menu of salads and paninis.
