The recent resurgence of roller skates can be best attributed to the introduction of municipal sidewalks and the corporate merger of shoe and car companies. Watch skaters glide in style with today's Groupon: for $12, you get two tickets to a Magnolia Roller Vixens roller-derby bout (up to a $24 value), which will take place at the Jackson Convention Complex. Tickets for kids 12 and younger normally cost $5. Choose from the following bouts:
- Against the Mobile, Alabama-based Torpedo Bay Rollergirls on Saturday, May 21.
- Against the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based Capital Offenders on Saturday, June 4.
- Against the Memphis, Tennessee-based Priskilla Presleys on Saturday, July 9.
- Against the Lafayette, Louisiana-based Acadiana Roller Girls on Saturday, August 20.
Each bout begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Skates scream around the roller-derby flat track as The Magnolia Roller Vixens jam and block with skill. These four bouts, respectively titled Rollergeddon, Skate the Plank, R2 Beatu, and Ridin' Derby, invite derby crews from neighboring states to share in an hour of jams, passes, and centrifugal physics. Dizzying spectacles of roller-skated agility and contact delight audiences as Roller Vixen skaters such as Rowdy Reeta Ricochet, Shifty Eyed Mavis, and Mischief Maker contend with opposing teams to crash and bang in two 30-minute halves composed of several jams. During each two-minute jam, four Vixen blockers vie for position to allow their jammer to pass the opposing team and score without being interrupted by a jutting hip, calculated collision, or existential debate.
Though roller derby is a high-contact sport, the Magnolia Roller Vixens propagate quality sportsmanship, participate in a charitable event each month, and donate group hugs upon request.
