It can be tough to tell cage-fed chickens from free-range, and even tougher to discern an organic head of lettuce from a genetically engineered head of lettuce with the body of a lion. Save the time you'd spend deliberating with today's Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of seasonal, sustainable fare at Main Street Garden & Cafe in Soquel.
The menu at Main Street Garden is crafted anew each week from ingredients culled from local farm suppliers. Chef Brad Briske and his staff use only pasture-raised meats, sustainable fish, and organic produce, all complemented by a wine list spotlighting local vineyards and a sarsaparilla list spotlighting local bathtubs.
A recent shared plate placed crispy pork belly atop fennel puree and house-made sauerkraut ($9), and house-made gnocchi encased ricotta, pork ragout, braised tomato, garden greens, and grana ($12–$18). Large-plate entrees have heralded surprising preparations of line-caught California halibut with savory clams and pork belly ($23) and crispy rabbit leg ($21). The eatery's on-site, 100 percent organic garden is harvested daily, so herbs, fruits, and vegetables avoid the bitter taste well-traveled produce acquires after too much time in airport bars.
- Main Street Garden has added an innovative, highly seasonal menu to a setting that's always been one of my favorites for its elegantly homey ambiance, pretty patio and graceful garden area. – Ann Parker, Santa Cruz Sentinel
- I really appreciate their focus on locally-sourced organic veggies and sustainably produced meat, all at a decent price. I've had a selection of their pizzas, salads, and entrees and all are delish. – crystal d., Yelp
