Eating out allows families to surround themselves in authentic cuisine, which is surrounded by a familial staff, which is surrounded by a lively atmosphere, which is surrounded by walls. Participate in the dance of destination dining with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of authentic Mexican dishes and drinks at Maizal Restaurant on Staten Island.
Maizal peels back the cornhusk from the culinary cornstalk with dishes laid out like chili peppers across an all-encompassing, occasionally spicy menu. Gracious guests can swim in a citrus sea of tequila-and-lime-fired shrimp rice ($14.95) or do a double take at the identical visages of enchiladas de mole poblano—two soft corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken and topped with sauce containing Mexican spices, nuts, and chocolate ($16.95). In the interest of an eclectic dining experience, Maizal loads up ladles with a homemade escabeche-and-sauce bar ($1 per flavor) and extinguishes belly brush fires with iced tea brewed from hibiscus petals ($2.50–$3). The restaurant’s guacamole al molcajete ($7.95 for a single, $12 for a double) is also sliced and prepped fresh, on the table, allowing diners to practically taste the avocados’ final regrets.
- First rate Guacamole al Molcajete — chunky avocados, onions, tomatoes and just the right amount of cilantro — was made fresh at our table. Empanadas de Chorizo, an appetizer special, featured spicy sausage, spinach and potatoes fried to perfection (i.e. not at all greasy). Empanadas were further enlivened by spicy pickled peppers, onions and a striking green-colored tomatillo sauce, all presented atop a banana leaf. – Staten Island Advance
