Make A Hero - Boulder: $10 or $15 Donation for Adaptive Ski Trip

The Issue: Physical Benefits of Adaptive Sports

For children and adults living with physical or cognitive impairments, sports can provide a valuable means of exercise and can help participants learn how to adapt to living with a disability—not to mention that sports can be an awful lot of fun. Adaptive sports programs use special training and equipment specifically designed for people with disabilities.

The Campaign: Funding Adaptive Ski Trip

If 50 people donate $10 or $15 to this Grassroots campaign, then Make a Hero - Portland can sponsor one individual with a physical disability and a family member on a skiing trip. Participants will receive transportation, adaptive equipment, lift tickets, and a full day of training with an adaptive ski instructor.

An additional $1,000 raised will fund a short film documenting the trip for the Hero Gallery on Make A Hero’s website. Each additional $500 past this amount will go toward funding a day of skiing for another individual with a disability and a family member. People who donate $15 and register with the organization will be given an access password to view an HD version of Make A Hero’s award-winning film The Movement, narrated by Robert Redford and Warren Miller.

Make A Hero - Portland

Though Kurt Miller spent two decades running his father’s namesake company, Warren Miller Entertainment, he was eventually drawn to another mission. Over the years, his father’s films had featured a variety of segments about athletes and volunteers involved in adaptive sports for players with disabilities. Inspired by their tales, Kurt founded Make A Hero to share these stories and help athletes with disabilities achieve their goals.

Make A Hero funds adaptive sports groups and raises awareness for programs involving athletes with disabilities. Through the efforts of Make A Hero, Kurt produced The Movement, a documentary about skier Rick Finkelstein, who relearned the sport after becoming paralyzed in an accident. The film has been featured in more than 20 festivals and qualified for an Oscar nomination.
