Sushi chef with more than 20 years of experience rolls octopus & eel into sushi & sashimi at restaurant where toy cats wave at diners

The rolled-up shape of sushi not only makes it fun to eat, but is also convenient for when one has to guide a fighter jet’s landing with the other hand. Taste delicious sushi single-handedly with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of Japanese cuisine at Maneki Neko in Falls Church.

Maneki Neko’s sushi chef, Futoshi Takazato, draws on more than 20 years of experience in rolling fish and rice and designing a menu filled with sushi, sashimi, and teriyaki dishes. Patrons can sidle up to the sushi bar and sample entrees of 13 assorted pieces, including salmon, rockfish, and octopus ($13.95). Diners and shelves of beckoning toy cats wave to one another as the guests dig into bento boxes ($15.75+) that burst with a selection of california rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and sashimi, or chicken, salmon, and beef teriyaki. Entrees of teriyaki-doused chicken, new york steak, or salmon ($10.95+) refuel diners after a long day of digging underground tunnels to neighborhood bank vaults, and bowls of broth swirl with traditional okinawa soba noodles and sautéed pork ($8.95). Patrons enjoying the casual atmosphere chat and duel with spoons over sweet finishes of ginger or green-tea ice cream ($4.75).

About Maneki Neko - OOB

Futoshi “Tao” Takazato got his first gig working at a sushi restaurant when he was 24 years old. From the start, he was mesmerized by how fish could be transformed into a colorful, delicious piece of art. It took Tao six months of practicing and learning before he’d make sushi for a customer; it took him five years to actually feel comfortable doing it. Eventually, Tao graduated to head chef. Rather than marking the occasion by etching an oven mitt into his driver's license, he decided it was time to open his own restaurant, and Maneki Neko Express was born.

Translated, Maneki Neko Express means “beckoning cat.” In Japan, a waving cat is a symbol of good fortune. In fact, the image is often propped up in the windows of businesses as a way to welcome customers inside. A similarly welcoming atmosphere pervades Maneki Neko Express, with staff members reaching a first-name basis with regular customers and customers who bring in notarized copies of their birth certificates. Niceties aside, it’s the cooking that turns first-time guests into regular visitors. Tao and his staff specialize in sushi, but they also craft other traditional Japanese dishes. They create savory pancakes called okonomiyaki and sauté pork with noodles to form the Okinawa Soba entree.
