Personal trainer, master yoga instructor, and wellness coach Carlos J. Sanchez coalesces his trio of disciplines during each outdoor boot-camp class. At the start of his 45-minute classes, Carlos encourages students to motivate one another with cheers and improvised epic poems in order to create a supportive exercise environment. A set of sun salutations awakens the entire body before campers vault into intensity with a burst of cardio drills. Next, Carlos slings a variety of strength-training exercises—such as calisthenics, sit-ups, and push-ups—occasionally completed with a set of hand weights or coconuts filled with gold bullion. Each move can be modified to facilitate fitness for newbies or toughen workouts for camp veterans. Held mostly outdoors, Carlos aims to enliven his patrons with fresh air while inspiring on-looking overgrown hedges to get back in shape. Check the camp’s schedule for class times; classes, which are usually held at Memorial Park in Maplewood, may move indoors to the Baird Recreation Center in South Orange due to inclement weather or below-freezing temperatures.

In addition to the camps, patrons will receive the added bonus of a nutritious meal plan and body assessment. The assessment is conducted through the nonmagical currents of a BodyMetrix ultrasound wand. The ultrasound technology aims to measure fat thickness, and subsequently calculate body-fat percentage, weight distribution, and the presence of subcutaneous angel wings. Movement and strength tests allow exercisers to track their precamp endurance, and the meal plan locks in lasting results with suggestions for healthy eating.
