The first people to successfully paint the town red spent more time haphazardly assembling scaffolding and arguing over who got to be the foreman than enjoying the results. Benefitting the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Memphis, Mardi Gras Memphis 2012 conjures a Cajun-themed evening of masquerading, and celebratory champagne toasts. Cocktails commence at 7 p.m. as guests sample wine and don masks, beads, and non-serpentine boas. A traditional brass band bursts in with a grand entrance at 7:45 as revelers regale appetites with hors d’oeuvres of traditional king cake, seafood, veggies, and pasta dishes. Glasses clink and libations flow all night from a cash bar as a live band and DJ stir partygoers into a high-stepping frenzy.
Festival organizers will benefit the local chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters with a check of the night’s proceeds and lead a midnight champagne toast to commemorate the epicurean evening. Organizers also name the night’s Mardi Gras king and queen, who can party with their constituents up until 1 a.m., when partiers safely head home or to New Orleans for some Memphis-style barbecue.
