Mares Eat Oats
Mares do in fact eat oats, but so do people thanks to Hammond's Mares Eat Oats: a cozy cafe with big windows looking out onto Russell St. “Everything is basically homemade, and everything is incredible,” owner Mary Longawa told The Times of Northwest Indiana. Those "incredible" dishes include steel cut oatmeal, muffins in flavors from guava to chocolate chip, and warm zucchini bread. Of course, no cafe would be complete without coffee, and Mares Eat Oats brews theirs using Farmer Brothers beans from Columbia. As for places to sit and enjoy these treats, there's a comfy couches inside, where patrons can peruse a bookshelf.
