Marina Sailing passes on the art of sailboat operation through classes helmed by ASA-certified instructors. A one-hour introductory sail outlines the elements of sailing, including sail operation, boating maneuvers, docking, and wheelies. Throughout the session, students can get involved within their comfort level or opt to sit back and soak up their newfound know-how.
Basic sailing lessons set students afloat for two three-hour sessions, which introduce the boat’s parts and essential movements. The first session revolves around water orientation and fundamental sailing principles, such as how to turn away from and into the wind, tie reliable knots, and learn a catalogue of operations to be performed with a drunken sailor. The second session reviews lessons learned in the previous one, in addition to sailing maneuvers such as single-handed tacking and jibbing, which keeps one hand free for yo-yoing. In all classes, small groups fit neatly onto the decks of their fleet of 22–29-foot vessels.
Should you choose to continue your briny education following the basic sailing courses, Marina Sailing will apply the courses to the balance of ASA 101 (Basic Sailing) and ASA 103 (Coastal Cruising), allowing members to get certified for $447.50. All textbooks and a Marina Sailing membership are included, after which the testing fee and regular monthly membership dues will apply.
