Ever since wearing a bed sheet with eyeholes cut in it became the trendiest spring fashion, separating actual phantasms from plain old fashionistas has become increasingly difficult. Sort fact from fiction with today's deal: for $8, you get to go on a Market Ghost Tour, a Market History Tour, or a Seattle Lust Tour (a $15 value each).

Twice named a Top 10 National Ghost Tour by TripAdvisors, the Market Ghost Tour lasts around 75 minutes and leads participants through the folkloric tales that populate the Pike Place Market at night. The supernatural sojourn reveals a fascinating side of the region's history, blending the realms of reality and lore by luring pedestrian curiosities into the unknown. Informative tour guides relish in the sharing of local ghost stories inspired by seeds of suspicion and mysterious encounters with paranormal forces. Opened a century ago as a means of bringing consumers into contact with their food's producers, the 9-acre market acts as a city unto itself, and the newly developed History Tour further details its rich lineage. Red-blooded visitors interested in perusing the district's tawdry past may be enticed by the Lust Tour, where they'll learn about philanthropic madams, sexual-revolution-era politics, and why First Avenue was once dubbed Flesh Avenue. Because many relevant landmarks are no longer extant, the Lust Tour also mixes in supernatural history, providing tour-goers with a perceptive insight into both la petite and la actual mort.

Market Ghost Tours are scheduled Tuesdays through Sundays at 7 p.m., with an additional 9 p.m. departure on Fridays and Saturdays. Market History Tours launch their season in April and shove off Tuesdays through Sundays at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and Seattle Lust Tours begin in May, departing Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and are for people 18 or older. Schedule your tour in advance to give the city's ghosts plenty of time to warm up both their vibratos and clammy hands for introductory hellos and handshakes. All three tours are walking tours, so customers should wear comfortable shoes.

The tour has been called a "best bet" in The Seattle Times and has been featured by Portland Destinations Travel Examiner. Thirty-nine Yelpers give the Market Ghost Tour 4.5 stars.

Market Ghost Tour

Paranormal activities are commonplace for Market Ghost Tour founder Mercedes Yaeger. She grew up with the ghost stories of her father, who spooked locals with tales on Halloween nights in Pike Place Market. Since then, Mercedes has self-published a book, Market Ghost Stories, compiled from exhaustive research of municipal archives, newspaper accounts, and freeze-frame analysis of Scooby-Doo archives. She spins many of those yarns on excursions with Market Ghost Tour, which the Seattle Post-Intelligencer named “one of Seattle’s best and weirdest attractions.” Mercedes and her guides lead guests on year-round exterior tours. The 75-minute Market Ghost Tour treks past the 9-acre district’s mortuaries, graveyards, and brothels as visitors hear frightening historical tales.
