About Martha Clara Vineyards
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Martha Clara Vineyards offers wine tastings of all kinds from a flight (series of small pours of 4-5 wines) to private wine tastings, to group tastings for 50+ people. They also host weddings and corporate events, feature local artists every month, and have a concert series in the winter.
What sets Martha Clara Vineyards apart from other wineries is their amount of space. Their property can comfortably satisfy over 300 guests at a given time with their vast outdoor and indoor space. They offer horse and carriage rides around the property (weather permitting) on the weekends where customers can see the whole farm and get a traditional horse and buggy experience. Sustainable Winegrowing is something that is very important to Martha Clara Vineyards as well (check out http://www.lisustainablewine.org/ for more information). They have made a conscious effort with a few other Vineyards in the area to push towards a carbon-neutral footprint. What also sets Martha Clara Vineyards apart from other wineries is their variety of wines to select from. With over 24 wine selections on their menu, they have the largest selection of any vineyard on the North Fork.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
In 1978, the Entenmann Family agreed to sell their renowned bakery to pursue other ambitious adventures. One of the grandsons of the founder of Entenmann's Bakery, Robert Entenmann, fell in love with the vast landscape of the East End and purchased a potato farm. After transforming the farm into a thoroughbred horse racing operation, he couldn't help but notice the changing landscape around him. The neighboring potato farms began to give way to fruitful vineyards, and it was just a matter of time before he would follow suit.
After starting with only 18 acres of grapes, Robert expanded his vineyard to over 80 acres. Then, in 1999, his new business opened their doors bearing his late mother's name, Martha Clara.
What do you love most about your job?
The atmosphere. Who isn't happy with a glass of wine in hand overlooking a 200 acre farm. Allowing people to escape the monotony of everyday life and experience a relaxing wine tasting experience puts a smile on almost everyone's faces.
