Gelato is a heavier, denser counterpart to ice cream, which makes it an excellent dessert but a terrible construction material for rubber duckies. Enjoy gelato's non-water-displacing properties with today's Groupon: for $6, you get $12 worth of café fare and gelato at Massa Italian Café & Gelateria in Elmwood Park.
Massa combines the respective menus of an espresso bar, a gelateria, and an Italian café into one emporium of edible excess. The espresso bar brews fresh joe and caffeinated specialty drinks made from daily-roasted beans. A double shot of espresso ($2.19) provides the exact amount of energy needed to consume a pint of one of more than 60 flavors of homemade gelato. Diners torn between a small cup of creamy gelato ($3.39) and a meatball panini ($6.49) can get the best of both worlds with Massa's Spaghetti & Meatballs sundae, a bowl of vanilla gelato run through a spaghetti press, then topped with strawberry sauce, toasted coconut, and two meatball-shaped mounds of chocolate gelato ($4.89). The café also serves individual 11" pizzas ($7.99–8.19), pastas ($7.95–8.95), and panzerotti ($5.69–5.99), a calzone-esque pizza turnover. Massa's sweet specialty, fried dough, comes with a simple dusting of sugar ($5.19) or as the groundwork for a gelato-and-fudge-drenched mega-sundae ($5.49–6.69), so rich and decadent that it convinces other desserts to feed it peeled grapes while it lays in a hammock.
