When the famous Tall Ships tour came to Boston in 2000, tourists and Bostonians flooded Boston Harbor to see the majestic ships. Nine years later, the spectacle is returning to the city. However, due to new regulations, landside access for the famous Tall Ships tour is limited, leaving Boston Harbor observation cruises as the only way to see their majesty. Luckily, today’s Groupon gets you the best seat in the harbor during Tall Ships ’09: aboard a professionally narrated cruise ship with Massachusetts Bay Lines for only $24 (a $42 value including tax and fees). There’s no better way to spend a steamy July weekend than witnessing this quintessential Boston spectacle with a group of friends or family.

The Tall Ships are the biggest and best seafaring vessels in the world. Commonly known tall ships include schooners, brigantines, brigs, and barques. These ships themselves are works of art, crafted with a wondrous complexity that modern ships made of cheaper materials lack. Most tall ships have been miniaturized and trapped in bottles, but now you can see giant versions of them parading across the water with grandeur. Each boat is professionally trained and is judged on appropriateness of ship name, majesty, and muzzle shape.

For decades, tall ships have been bred by a group of tall people led by former basketball players Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol, and former actors Andre the Giant and a very high-heeled Rosie Perez. Frustrated by the challenges that average ships and short ships posed (getting hair tangled in the jib, getting stuck in small cabins, uncomfortable ducking, etc.), the team gathered to conceive a ship that could accommodate their size. The first tall ship was unveiled at the 1985 Tall Person Conference “It’s Empowering to be Towering,” and since then, Perez and team have handcrafted more than 300,000 fully functional ships.

MBL, the oldest-operating commuter-boat service in Boston Harbor, is thrilled to offer this fantastic deal on Groupon, the oldest-operating community-based daily-deal site in Boston. This rare event only happens once in a long while, and this is the only way to see it on the water. Don’t miss out!

Massachusetts Bay Lines, Inc.

During tours with Massachusetts Bay Lines, passengers can watch the sun dip behind the city from the middle of the harbor. Lights flicker on across the skyline, poking holes in the setting darkness and pinpointing each building's location. All the while, the water laps against the side of the boat, providing a soothing soundtrack.

Massachusetts Bay Lines has specialized in stunning views such as these for over 50 years. The family-owned company operates out of Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston, and its fleet includes a total of five unique vessels, instead of just one boat with a different name painted on the side each week. Customers can rent these boats out as private charters, or they can climb aboard for music and group tours of the harbor, which cruise past the 200-year-old USS Constitution and many more of the city's historic sites.

The sunset cruise was absolutely stunning! I took breathtaking pictures of the sun setting behind Boston! The reason I gave it 4 stars was because it was really hard to hear the man talking about the history. I do wish it was louder.
