Born in Osaka, Japan, Masuo Sato first traveled to America as a professional skier. When he wasn't flying down the mountains in Aspen, he spent his time in kitchens, learning the art of crafting sushi. His culinary passion blossomed and eventually sent him to sunny California, where he now spends his days building inventive dishes inside Masuo's Restaurant.
Here, specialty rolls promise bites of tempura shrimp and Cajun tuna topped with fresh kiwi slices and eel sauce. Any roll can be wrapped in soy paper, a sliced cucumber wrap, or a thick tartan blanket to ensure the ingredients stay put. As for himself, Masuo rarely stays put; diners can watch him work his magic from their seats inside the dining room. But sushi isn't the only trick in his culinary bag. The menu also features a number of hot dishes, including appetizers of tempura jalapeños and teriyaki chicken, both of which are best enjoyed while relaxing on the outdoor patio.
