Before the bull was invented, matadors wowed crowds by fighting (and traditionally losing to) cheetahs, triceratopses, and the deadliest animal of all—man riding a teleporting shark. Toast their valiant efforts with today’s Groupon. For $10, you get $25 worth of south-of-the-border fare and drinks at Matador Mexican Cantina. This Groupon is good for both its Oakhurst Village and Glenwood Park locations.
Matador Mexican Cantina is well versed in the three ts of proper Mexican dining: tacos, tequila, and troposphere (atmosphere’s laid-back, margarita-sipping cousin). Matador Mexican Cantina prides its own welcoming troposphere with a rustic interior that gently warms patrons like the hot desert sun during its annual winter staycation. However, tacos ($2–$4.50) carve out the largest section of the cantina's menu of Mexican specialties. With 14 varieties (also known as an Idiot's Dozen), patrons can sample unconventional taco varietals such as spicy shrimp, tofu, lobster, buffalo, fried banana, and even banana mixed with carnita (pork marinated in tomatillo and cinnamon). Every tipo de taco tastes best when bookended by a starter of the cantina's über-popular cheese dip ($4.25) and a dessert of flan ($3.75).
With a wide range of veggie options, ample big-screen TVs, and an outdoor patio, Matador Mexican Cantina is a great after-work hangout for an entire cuadrilla of picadores, banderilleros, and fighting bulls. So fly an Acme rocket down to Matador and enjoy hearty Mexican fare while sketching elaborate roadrunner-trapping devices on your napkin.
Reviewers agree that the cheese dip and the taco selection are the menu's standouts. Citysearchers give Matador Mexican Cantina in Oakhurst Village four stars, Insider Pagers give it three stars, and Yelpers give the Glenwood location 3.5 stars:
- I started off the night with a House Margarita and cheese dip...both of which were amazing. I ordered the Carnitas, and my date had the Carne Asada Tacos...There was not a drop of food left on the plates! – butterfliesarefree, Citysearch
- I'm an extreme taco snob and left impressed by the kitchen's variety and quality of tacos. Bobbin W., Yelp
Matador Mexican Cantina
Cartoon skulls color the ragged wooden sign outside Matador's, creating a rustic, yet playful, atmosphere where cuisine from the Michoacán region treats taste buds to an authentic taste of Mexico. Pulled pork, tilapia, and tofu are just a sample of what's stuffed into the tortillas of 14 types of tacos, which sate south-of-the-border cravings quicker than a deep-fried bolo tie. Combination plates and vegetarian options round out the menu at the restaurant's two locations, both of which offer spacious patio seating. At the newer Glenwood Park location, patrons can relax in a separate bar area as flat-screen TVs glimmer across intoxicating bottles of top-shelf spirits.
