In a society without comfort food, potatoes would go unmashed, cheese unmelted, and empty ice cream cones would be repurposed to store car keys. Thankfully, today's Groupon gets you $30 worth of gourmet comfort food for $15 at Max's Wine Dive. Stop in for Max's all-day Sunday brunch (11a.m. to 9p.m.), lunch (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays), or dinner at a restaurant with the motto of, "Fried chicken and champagne? ...Why the hell not?!"
Max's Wine Dive is renowned for a dinner menu with culinary chutzpah that turns chilidogs, cheese fries, and burgers into gourmet flavors. The Texas Haute Dog (a venison chili-smothered beef dog with St. Arnold beer Sauerkraut topped with fried onion strings; $14) is a signature dish at Max's, and the Kobe beef burger (Yama Farms Texas Kobe beef burger with Belletoielle triple cream brie, in-house pickled jalapenos, Texas tomato, and organic Bibb lettuce on a brioche bun, $18) is a favorite. If you're feeling ravenous, opt in to the all-you-can-eat fried chicken and waffles (natural, steroid-free chicken with jalapeno and buttermilk marinade, deep fried, with waffle; $20) during Sunday brunch. Woman's Day recently named Max's grilled cheese (Veldhuizen Farm’s Gruyère, provolone, and piquillo-pepper pimento served with a shot of tomato soup and homemade sweet-pickle salad; $14) one of the top 10 in the nation.
Max's is an easygoing spot with friendly, attentive servers and a spacious, airy dining room. There's a jukebox pumping killer tunes, and a wide array of wines (starting at $8.75 per glass). The gigantic, handpicked wine list changes daily, but expect more than 100 selections from cabernet sauvignon and syrah to Spanish and South American reds. Max’s also features a basement-level 2,000 square foot private dining space called “Max’s Underground” – perfect for private or corporate events and dinners.
Max's original Houston location is one of Bon Appetit's 10 hottest wine bars in the country, Texas Monthly named Max's Kobe burger one of the top-20 burgers in the state, and Woman's Day named Max's one of the 10 Greatest Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Check out Max's Wine Dive on YouTube and read about it in Austinist, Dishola, Austin American-Statesman, Austin Business Journal, Rebeccammendations, and Maggie's Austin.
