What You'll Get
Renaissance men were known for their artistic genius, rapier-sharp wit, and ability to slice the paintings of their rivals with actual rapiers before sprinting into the night. Emulate Renaissance people with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get two adult tickets (a $20 value) to the Mayfaire Renaissance Festival at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds in Marshall. Children aged five and under are free and children 6–12 are $5. Today's deal is valid on Saturday, May 21, Sunday, May 22, Saturday, May 28, Sunday, May 29, and Monday, May 30.
The Mayfaire Renaissance Festival transports visitors back through the centuries to a pre-1600s village for a vernal celebration replete with musicians, comedians, a royal court, tasty meals, and more. Nosh on Old World classics such as turkey legs or steak-on-a-stick or spend the king’s coin at the festival’s merchant shops, which tout painted wooden shields, herbal teas, handmade jewelry, and pine-scented armor fresheners.
Musical acts such as the Celtic string ensemble Anam Kara grace the fest’s four outdoor stages alongside groups such as the Dark Flower Gypsies, a belly-dancing troupe that mesmerizes audiences with veils, swords, and serpents. Jugglers, comedians, and troubadours wander the festival grounds entertaining peasants as the queen’s royal court dances merrily around the Maypole and sends everyone who makes eye contact with her majesty to the stocks. Time-traveling visitors are encouraged to dress in period-appropriate garments and balance their four humors to achieve Renaissance-appropriate levels of black bile.
