The five-hour beginners' digital-photography course takes place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on August 11 at the Spokane Convention Center. Here, developing shutterbugs master the manual settings of their cameras and discover firsthand how a change in shutter speed, aperture, or ISO affects images. Instructors also cover compositional best practices such as the rule of thirds, lens choice, and the use of leading lines. Although any digital camera may be used, students will get the most out of the class by bringing a high-quality camera with a manual mode.

McKay Photography Academy

Bearing the titles of Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman from Professional Photographers of America, David and Ally McKay embody the keen vision and aesthetic prowess that separated good photographers from great ones. They share these skills during classes at McKay Photography Academy, where they train eyes, fingers, and imaginations to work in tandem as a snapshooting dream machine. Their classes help aspiring photographers progress from neophytes to seasoned pros. When not busy instructing the next generation of shutterbugs, David and Ally also devise photo safaris, which send small teams of photographers to capture shots of famed landmarks including San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge; the Lincoln Memorial of Washington, DC; or Yosemite's 60-foot statue of Yogi Bear.

David & Ally are fantastic instructors. Not only are they masters of their craft, they are masters at instilling confidence and enthusiasm in their students through instruction in a fun and supportive environment. I've hesitated moving from Auto mode to Manual mode on my DSLR, but after taking the beginning class and learning so much about the mechanics of the camera and lens, the various settings and how all of this affects exposure, I now have the confidence to shoot in Manual. Highly recommend their classes!
