Scotch: A Regional Matter
When picking a scotch, provenance can be paramount. Lean on Groupon’s overview of Scotland’s whiskey-producing regions to help find your new favorite.
The Lowlands: With just three working distilleries to its name, the Lowlands produces whiskies light in character and delicate in aroma.
The Highlands: It’s nearly impossible to make generalizations about the malts from here, mainly because this region takes up most of Scotland. As a result, scotch from the Highlands can run the gamut from dry to sweet and even feature a hint of smokiness.
Islay: Or, Whiskey Island. Though it’s small—just 239 square miles—the Island of Islay (say “ay-luh”) boasts eight distilleries. From those distilleries comes a very explicit roster of malts, heavily peated and packing a smoky taste.
Speyside: Just like Islay, Speyside doesn’t cover a lot of ground, yet it’s home to about half of Scotland’s malt whiskey distilleries. Speyside puts out the fruitiest, sweetest whiskies of any region.
Campbeltown: Once populated by some 30 distilleries, modern-day Campbeltown has just 3, producing medium- to full-bodied malts infused with a salty note.
