Mela Indian Bar & Grill
At Mela Indian Bar & Grill, you won't find any posters of the Taj Mahal and an animatronic Bollywood star won't sing to you if it's your birthday. What you'll find instead is a contemporary space that favors a sleek minimalism accented with the occasional colored-glass urn, polished cymbal, or sunburst chandelier. The restaurant's emphasis, according to San Antonio Current's Ron Bechtol, is where it should be—on the food.
Luckily, there is nothing minimalist about Mela's menu. Indian delicacies range from the popular roadside snack of dahi papri chaat (crispy fried dough doused with a zesty dressing) to specialty entrees of goat karahi and navratan korma, which simmers nine garden-fresh vegetables in spiced coconut-cream sauce. Persia also make a surprise cameo in the royal dessert of falooda, an ice-cream sundae augmented with rose-flavored milk and turkmeria seeds. Fluffy naan bread fresh from the tandoor oven and sweet mango or strawberry lassi drinks also play nice with the spices in Mela's many masalas, vindaloos, and tikkas.
