The benefits of healthy eating run deep and include weight loss, wider eyelid separation, and a statistically higher likelihood of dating a Tom Hanks character. Health-up your diet with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of healthy prepared fare from Mel's Meals, the locally owned meal-preparation station in downtown Austin.
Because eating healthy isn't easy, and eating healthy while eating out is even un-easier, Melissa Sterns started Mel's Meals (formerly Tasty Healthy Meals), a downtown establishment where she and her staff prepare delicious, low-priced breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for busy professionals, parents, plant-sitters, and anybody else who doesn't have the time or know-how to do it on their own. Using only whole grains and avoiding sugar and preservatives, Mel's whips up delightful dishes such as fish tacos ($7), made with just 500 calories worth of mahi-mahi, low-fat Fage-brand yogurt, and a bevy of fresh veggies on whole-wheat tortillas. Or try the gluten-free Cuban beef ($7.50) with black beans and whole-grain rice. Whether you're a vegetarian for health reasons, a love of animals, or a hatred of plants, Mel's herbivorous menu options abound and include the scrumptious roasted eggplant ($6) with pesto, whole-grain penne, and feta. Busy cosmonauts, meanwhile, can secure a tastier breakfast-on-the-go than their usual toothpaste tube full of borscht with a stack of sweet-potato pancakes ($4) made with skim milk and Smart Balance butter, which weighs in at a svelte 360 calories.
Drop by Mel's Meals during business hours to peruse refrigerators packed with meals waiting to be adopted by a loving digestive tract. You can also order online to pick up your meal in the store or have it delivered to your home or office. Delivery is free for orders more than $30 (there's a $10 charge for orders less than $30); orders arrive the day after they're received. If you can't be present when your food arrives, leave a cooler with ice outside your door. If this requires too much effort, simply carve an enormous ice sculpture shaped like your own head with its mouth open.
- I'm vegan and have food allergies and their foods are all labeled with all ingredients and nutritional value. Really great tasting and quick in and out of the store. – Becky D., Yelp
- They are a real time saver, reasonably priced, and healthy to boot!! – Jack C., Yelp
- I've gotten in the habit of stopping by this place once a week to stock up on some treats to eat throughout the week. And I do mean treats, because their entrees and desserts do not taste like "diet food" at all. – Chelsea W., Yelp
