Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese
It would be an understatement to say that the kitchen at Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese just makes grilled cheese sandwiches. These sandwiches push the boundaries so much that the menu lists them in three categories. "Simple" lists options that include just cheese, and "uncommon" sandwiches go beyond bacon and tomato with additions that are inventive, but perhaps not so surprising, such as pepperoni and tomato sauce or garlic chicken and avocado ranch sauce. The "extreme" sandwiches are billed as "over the top," pushing the boundaries of the simple grilled cheese with pulled pork, or turkey and sweet potatoes.
These inventive combinations are the brainchild of the owner Chef Joe McCarthy and the general manager Chef Lou Davey. They won the professional division of the Kama Sutra category in the 2013 Grilled Cheese Invitational with her Potsticker Meltz. The sandwich blends the flavors of provolone cheese, pepperjack cheese, pork, peppers, garlic, ginger, scallions, soy, sesame, fried wontons, and a sriracha-chili aioli in an unexpected way. When out on the town, grilled cheese lovers can keep an eye out for the bright-white Mobile Meltz food truck, from which they can snatch a sandwich on the go.
