Memphis Black Expo celebrates black culture and Black History Month with entertainment exhibitions, creative competitions, career-building opportunities, and a weekend full of community-enriching events. The jubilation starts Friday night with a party for guests 21 and older featuring wine, bites of chilled cheesecake, and music from up-and-coming artists, setting a more festive mood than using a party hat as a trumpet. On Saturday, black businesses gather together for a showcase of their wares, and college and job fairs provide networking opportunities for attendees. Competitions, such as the My Black Is Beautiful children’s natural-beauty pageant and a family-portrait competition give contestants the chance to bring home a prize based on their intrinsic gifts, unlike other competitions based on who brings judges the best gifts. Saturday night also features the musical stylings of a dance and step jamboree and a gospel-choir competition. Capping the weekend of events, Sunday brings an on-trend black hair, art, and runway-fashion show, highlighting local boutique owners and fine art from black artists.
