Creating a masterwork of art can be like wandering through a maze: after a lengthy period of reflection and contemplation, you’ll still probably starve. Appreciate the figurative risks and transcendent joys of artistic creativity with today’s Groupon: for $50, you get 10 one-hour open studio sessions at The Art House at the Memphis Jewish Community Center (a $100 value). Materials are included in the price of admission.
The Art House at the MJCC is a sanctuary for creative expression, providing space and materials for budding artists to practice their craft. During a one-hour open studio session, visiting crafters can pluck beads, buttons, feathers, and other materials from rows of supply bins, or experiment with paint, markers, and other mind-matter transference devices. Families can attend and work together to craft a collaborative sculpture, a group self-portrait, or a wax figurine of Donald Trump made from melted crayons. Over the course of 10 sessions, handmade masterworks can be polished, finished, and brought home to accumulate on previously bare walls and empty mantels.
