What You'll Get
Many scenes of ancient culture are depicted in the layers of sedimentary mosaic art that dot the rolling landscapes of Greece and Italy. Create a modern mosaic masterpiece with today's Groupon: for $35, you can make a piece of mirror or wall art in a mosaic class (an $80 value) at Mercury Mosaics on Tyler Street Northeast.
Mercury Mosaics is devoted to providing handmade tiles and mosaics for home and business installation. Learn to work with your hands and craft an item using its artisan techniques over the course of a three-hour class. With expert instructors and piles of handmade tiles on hand, you'll create a one-of-a-kind 10"x10" mirror or 8"x20" wall mosaic with which to festoon your homestead or walk-in humidor. All required materials are provided, and expert instructors guide you step by step as you plan and assemble your piecey pièce de résistance. Due to time constraints, however, you'll have to complete the final step of grouting at home, equipped only with detailed instructions, Mercury-provided grout, and a pack of signal flares.
Classes run Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The tessera tutorials max out at 20 students, ensuring attention as individualized and detailed as the pieces of art being created. Use this Groupon as a gift or as an opportunity to finally silence an overly chatty enchanted mirror with a heavy slab of tile and dollop of grout. Students who participate in the class will receive a 10% discount on a future commercial or residential tiling project.

About Mercury Mosaics
When Mercedes Austin sees a piece of artwork, her imagination immediately breaks it down into pixels and rebuilds it as a tile mosaic. Recently, she executed this process by making a mosaic of a wall mural: She fabricated jagged tiles, arranged them to resemble the original, and grouted the piece together. The resulting mosaic speaks to her intuition as an artist, and also to the years she’s spent honing the craft.
At Mercury Mosaics’ studio, Mercedes and a team of “tile elves” share their passion in two ways: through mosaic classes and custom installations. Classes explore all facets of mosaic creation, from cutting and gluing to grouting tiles into a pattern that resembles a real-life object or fuzzy television screen. Installations, which are fully customized to the client’s specifications, add a distinctive flair to commonly tiled areas such as bathrooms, backsplashes, and fireplaces.
