Creative talents, like houseplants and celebrities, wilt without proper attention. Nurture your inner artist with today's Groupon: for $35, you get a beginner mosaic class at Mercury Mosaics (an $80 value). Basic classes are scheduled on every other Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mercury Mosaics' experienced instructors teach students to work with handmade tiles to create mosaics for home or business installation. During the three-hour basic class, tiling trainees learn to work with their hands, piles of handmade tiles, and artisan techniques to craft a one-of-a-kind 10"x10" mirror mosaic or 8"x15" wall mosaic with which to festoon their homestead or walk-in humidor. Mercury Mosaics provides all required materials, and a practiced teacher guides pupils step by step as they plan and assemble their pièce de résistance.
To maximize drying time, amateur artists complete the final step of grouting at home, equipped with detailed instructions, Mercury Mosaics–provided grout, and a pack of signal flares. The tessera tutorials max out at 20 students, ensuring attention as individualized and detailed as the pieces of art being created. Individuals of all ages are welcome, though Mercury Mosaics recommends that an adult accompany children under the age of 10.
When Mercedes Austin sees a piece of artwork, her imagination immediately breaks it down into pixels and rebuilds it as a tile mosaic. Recently, she executed this process by making a mosaic of a wall mural: She fabricated jagged tiles, arranged them to resemble the original, and grouted the piece together. The resulting mosaic speaks to her intuition as an artist, and also to the years she’s spent honing the craft.
At Mercury Mosaics’ studio, Mercedes and a team of “tile elves” share their passion in two ways: through mosaic classes and custom installations. Classes explore all facets of mosaic creation, from cutting and gluing to grouting tiles into a pattern that resembles a real-life object or fuzzy television screen. Installations, which are fully customized to the client’s specifications, add a distinctive flair to commonly tiled areas such as bathrooms, backsplashes, and fireplaces.
