When they’re not busy designing elegant ceramic and mosaic artwork for residential and commercial spaces, Mercury Mosaics’ artists share their trade with students during expertise-stuffed tile-crafting classes. Amateur artists can dive into a mountain of cut tiles during the three-hour beginners’ mosaic class, helping dexterous digits learn to assemble a layout, nip and adhere tiles, and grout a custom finished 10” x 10” mirror, 8” x 15” wall panel, or four-dimensional bust of Darth Vader. During the five-hour advanced mosaic class, students work one-on-one with staff members to heighten their mosaic-design skills and bring complicated patterns to life on mirrors and grouted slabs. The advanced class features access to a select array of tiles and includes tasty snacks, coffee, and tea to prevent subconscious desires from shifting tiles into outlines of cheeseburgers. Available times for each option are listed on the class website.

About Mercury Mosaics
When Mercedes Austin sees a piece of artwork, her imagination immediately breaks it down into pixels and rebuilds it as a tile mosaic. Recently, she executed this process by making a mosaic of a wall mural: She fabricated jagged tiles, arranged them to resemble the original, and grouted the piece together. The resulting mosaic speaks to her intuition as an artist, and also to the years she’s spent honing the craft.
At Mercury Mosaics’ studio, Mercedes and a team of “tile elves” share their passion in two ways: through mosaic classes and custom installations. Classes explore all facets of mosaic creation, from cutting and gluing to grouting tiles into a pattern that resembles a real-life object or fuzzy television screen. Installations, which are fully customized to the client’s specifications, add a distinctive flair to commonly tiled areas such as bathrooms, backsplashes, and fireplaces.
