A simple green awning on Manhattan's Lower East Side beckons passersby into Meskel Ethiopian Restaurant's intimate dining room. Yet, even though the signage is minimalist, the flavors are not.
Meat and vegetarian delicacies sail to tables on top of spongy injera—delicacies such as onions, garlic, and ginger cooked with shredded collard greens or cilantro and tomatoes sautéed with cubed pieces of chicken. Guests sip honey wine and scoop up the meats and vegetables with the injera bread, using it in the place of more traditional scooping utensils such as forks, spoons, and tongues.
