Rather than trying to harness all of Italy's regional cuisines, Mezzogiorno conjures a favorite Florentine cucina in an art-filled SoHo dining room. Seasonal ingredients top pastas or pizzas, which are fired in the dining room's main focal point: a wood-burning oven covered in a massive mask, where paddles draw finished pizzas out of its open mouth.
Prosciutto di parma envelops caramelized pears on the antipasti menu, which also includes sautéed baby artichokes with pistachios and parmesan. First courses of housemade mushroom ravioli topped with black truffle make way for entrees such as marinated cornish hen served with carrot flan, or a thin-crust Selvatica pizza simply dressed in tomato, mozzarella, pesto, and pine nuts. Mezzogiorno fills its wine cellar with top varietals from each of Italy's wine-making regions, alongside popular table wines.
Florentine architect Roberto Magris designed the dining room, where a grid of pieces from 100 artists evokes "warm summer days" with paintings, collages, and other objets d'art. During the spring, summer, and autumn, patrons can dine alfresco beneath a blue awning, which protects patio tables from the sun and envious passersby attempting to steal bites.
