About Middleton Place

Founded in 1741 and maintained by a single family for over 250 years, spacious Middleton Place is the oldest landscaped garden in the U.S. Among the 65 acres at this National Historical Landmark, thousands of camellia trees and azalea bushes punctuate the geometrically-precise layers of green. The gardens follow the classical design of famed 17th century French architect Andre Le Notre, who designed the gardens at the Palace of Versailles near Paris.

Middleton Place also has a House Museum, which is the part of the original house that survived the Civil War. Inside the House Museum are rare family collections which include family portraits and furniture, along with a collection of Russian items from the decade spent in St. Petersburg by Governor Henry Middleton, who served as one of the first U.S. ambassadors to Russia. The spacious landscape has places for walkers to rest, including the popular Middleton Place Restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner. The Garden Market and Museum Gift Shop are also available to visitors. In addition to observing the work of the craftspeople and farm workers in the Plantation Stableyards, visitors can take in three complimentary tours with general admission. They include the Garden Overview, the "Meet the Breeds" Stableyard tour, and the "Beyond the Fields" walking tour that looks at the life and culture of the enslaved population at Middleton Place.
