Mike Shannon has been many things: former football player, third baseman for the Cardinals, broadcaster, and the Earl of Canterbury. Now he's bringing a dinner menu featuring a vast array of land and sea meats to the hungered masses. Every steak, from the 20-ounce porterhouse ($39) to the 10-ounce, dry-aged, bone-in tenderloin filet ($48), can be cooked to your specifications and served topped with bleu-cheese butter, sweet smokey rub, béarnaise sauce, horseradish mousse, or an equally salivatory sauce ($2 each). Select cuts of local, grass-fed beef from Jackson, Missouri, are also available.
For a meat that isn't cow, try seared duck breast, golden-roasted with chanterelles, petite carrots, and huckleberries under a citrus duck glaze ($32). For meat that doesn't have legs, opt for pan-seared Chilean sea bass with crispy sushi rice cake, candied shitake mushrooms, and snow peas ($32) or lobster tails (market price). Mike Shannon's tries to avoid the v-word, but it does offer a tasty "not quite meat" platter of grilled vegetables ($18) and specialty salads.
If you have as many stomachs as the cow you're eating, bookend your meal with a fancy appetizer of escargot Marseilles in crème de menthe garlic butter ($12) and a sinful dessert of blueberry gooey butter cake ($8). Wash it all down with something from Mike's encyclopedic, newbie-friendly listing of red and white wines. Tables of more than eight can combine two Groupons for $100 worth of food and drink, so treat your entire fantasy baseball team to a taste of Cardinals history.
Groupon not valid for "The Outfield"; indoor dining only. Not valid April 12, 16, 17, or 30.
Reviews
The Riverfront Times rated Mike Shannon's Steaks and Seafood Best Steak House in 2007. Gayot has also featured the restaurant:
- [The 8 oz. tenderloin] was tender and juicy, with a delicious charcoal sear and a rich beef flavor…The thick-cut steak fries are crisp outside, pillowy inside, and the garlic mashed potatoes — in a pile so towering it brought to mind the famous mashed-potatoes scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind — were as light as cotton candy and nearly as sweet. – Ian Froeb, Riverfront Times
- Expect huge portions, standout first-course mussels and top-quality steaks. Service shines, and bartending is topnotch. – Gayot
Citysearchers give it a solid 3.5 stars, and 81% of Urbanspooners recommend it:
- The crab cake appetizer was spicy and very unique. The prime rib? MELTED in my mouth, the best I've ever had! – stephanieakerman, Citysearch
- It is on the casual side for such a place, which makes it excellent when your [sic] out on the town. And you've got to check out the decor if your [sic] a baseball fan at all. – fan43fever, Citysearch
