Until science allows customized breezes to play concertos through trees and tuned blades of grass, people must fetch their concertos from live musicians. Today's Groupon sings to the ears with premium orchestra-seat tickets to Ohlsson Plays Chopin by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for $20, a $57 value. In two performance dates at the stunning Uihlein Hall on Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3, at 8 p.m., pianist Garrick Ohlsson will capture and tame Frédéric Chopin's famous Piano Concerto No. 2 and two other solo piano pieces in celebration of Chopin's 200th birthday.
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra strives to attain sonic expressions of the human spirit. Written in a fit of adolescent love, Chopin's Concerto No. 2 is a resounding example of emotional upheaval communicated through song as the notes of the piano speak the words of inexpressible affection. The two-night program is conducted by the esteemed Maestro Edo de Waart, who marks his debut season with the orchestra through this three-song performance of Chopin accompanied by Berlioz's Beatrice et Benedict Overture and Elgar's Symphony No. 1. Former music majors and current music lovers are invited to a pre-concert discussion at 7 p.m. that introduces the virtuosic back-story of the evening's composers and compositions along with a warm welcome for the show's performer and conductor as they individually blow out 200 candles in Chopin's honor.
The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel offers this rave review of a recent performance by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra:
- Power, raw emotion, softly blurred colors and ringing brass were all part of a Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra program that left the audience standing, whistling and cheering Friday evening...Dividing into antiphonal sections, the players formed tight, clean ensembles for a colorful, musical, completely engaging performance. – Elaine Schmidt
