Since oxygen bars were introduced in the United States in the late 1990s, the trend has customers bellying up to bars around the country to sniff oxygen through a plastic hose (cannula) inserted into their nostrils. By pumping oxygen through an aroma en route to the nose, patrons can choose various “flavors” of oxygen including peppermint, bayberry, cranberry, wintergreen, and more. The oxygen experience in a bar can last from a few minutes to about 20 minutes, depending on customers’ preferences. Oxygen fans tout the benefits of oxygen as reducing stress, increasing energy and alertness, lessening the effects of hangovers, headaches, and sinus problems, and generally relaxing the body.
Mind Body & Soul
Within the dim, private rooms of Mind Body & Soul, soft lighting permeates the tranquil atmosphere as curtains diffuse outside light, noise, and distractions. Muted hues of yellow, green, and blue coat the walls as guests lie on comfortable treatment tables. Massage therapists tend to their resting clients; long, deep strokes chase away stress and anxieties from muscles in Swedish massage, while hot stones placed along the back send warm relaxation down the spine. For especially tense backs or for those who travel by suitcase, there is the four-handed massage, performed by two therapists at once. Elsewhere, under the direction of a medical doctor, cold-laser therapy works in a few different ways. In body-contouring treatments, it works to help shrink fat cells, while in a pain-management context, it soothes pains and injuries through FDA-approved techniques.
