In the face of shrinking budgets, music programs across the country are being slashed, limiting children’s access to the positive benefits of arts education. The arts not only help children express themselves creatively, they heighten students’ abilities to solve problems in other educational fields such as math and science, contributing to critical thinking and a well-rounded education. The Minnesota Sinfonia organizes educational programs, free concerts, and family-friendly classic-music programs to inspire fervor for orchestral music in underserved schoolchildren.
Music in the Schools (MIS), the Sinfonia’s inner-city education program, supports artistic learning for nearly 12,000 elementary students from 19 area schools, injecting classical music into their core curriculum. Visiting individual classes, professional musicians share their experiences with students while deftly blending mathematics, literature, history, and the sciences into the chords and rhythms of famous masterworks. As the culmination of this program, students in each school gather with the full orchestra for Sinfonia Day, an interactive concert where the children perform with the Sinfonia for their friends and families and share what they learned through the study of music.
