When Constantinos Micholopoulos established Mitchell’s Restaurant in 1906, he had no way of knowing he was directing the course of his family's history for at least the next 100 years. But more than a century later, the restaurant remains in the care of his grandson and great-grandson, Jim and Matt Mitchell. (The difference in family name is the result of a painter's inability to fit "Micholopoulous" on the restaurant's window.)
That's not to say the restaurant hasn't gone through changes over the years. It's moved locations more than once within a four block radius downtown, and it's sometimes included offshoots such as a butcher shop and convenience store. And in fact, Constantinos might not even recognize many of the dishes that are now go-tos at Mitchell's: chicken wings brined in PBR, breaded provolone sticks served with marinara, and a Mitchell's Mac made with smoked cheddar, béchamel, and cavatappi. Now customers can even wash down these favorites with brews from 24 new beer taps.
But one thing hasn't changed: Mitchell’s is still a beloved gathering place for the community. Every weekday, customers come out to enjoy specials ranging from pork chop dinners to Thursday night trivia.
