Knitting circles were once a popular place to exchange rumors about the area's handsomest fireman, which of the neighboring towns' mayors were secretly left-handed, and the fate of the Crumb brothers. Get your finger on the pulse and on some yarn with today's Groupon to Modern Yarn in Montclair. Choose between two options:

  • For $30, you get two Mommy and Me Learn-to-Knit classes (an $80 value).
  • For $35, you get two beginners' knitting or crochet classes and $10 toward supplies (a $70 total value).

Learn to Knit and Learn to Crochet classes take place Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Mommy and Me classes begin Saturdays at 9:30 a.m.

Armed with an arsenal of yarn products, the artisans at Modern Yarn share their steadying hands to teach stitchery to neophyte yarn wranglers. Over the course of two Learn to Crochet classes, owner and certified art instructor Kathleen McWilliams Ward instills apprentices with the chain-stitch, single-crochet, and double-crochet skills necessary to breathe life into a scarf or woo a Raggedy Anne doll, and in each 90-minute Learn to Knit class, students wield the store's materials to practice techniques such as casting-on, knitting, and binding off. Students use their supplies credit to purchase needles ($10+/pair) and yarn ($10+) to complete a culminating final project of their choice. Alternatively, Mommy and Me Learn to Knit classes weave a patterned bond between parents and kids as they work together to turn threads into clothing, blankets, or decorative hang gliders.

Modern Yarn’s freshly decorated tapestry depot boasts a new line of yarns, needles, and other products from socially conscious companies, many of whom aim to provide work to women in South America, Nepal, and Vietnam. In addition, students will often wield wooden needles from fast-growing renewable trees, use project bags made from recycled inner tubes, and practice ergonomically friendly hugs. The shop also lends its needle prowess to charity knitting programs and buys phone service from the Working Assets program, which donates portions of phone bills to social causes.
