Q&A with Maggie Carvalho, Owner/yoga Teacher
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Yoga is not meant to frustrate us when we don't reach a certain goal. It teaches us to love the body we are in first—then an inner shift will be reflected on the outside. It starts with how we feel about ourselves. Once they feel empowered, this will simply become a part of their routine. They stay motivated by feeling the modification themselves in their bodies, minds, and spirits.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
Absolutely not. While I believe a challenge is necessary for growth, pain is not something that has to be felt and can be destructive to our bodies and our minds. There's a difference between pain and discomfort. Modify believes that an awareness of this is important to living a more fulfilling life.
Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
Yes. Our music varies, but tends to stay on the softer, sweet side of the music spectrum.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We are coming back to the roots of why yoga was created: to connect the body, mind, and soul. We guide you through a series of movements that teaches us to be in alignment. It's our way of reconnecting you to what's important in this bright yet chaotic modern world.
