Bring water with lots of ice. It warms up fast. Instructors and staff are warm and inviting. Don't forget to be quiet to enjoy the calm.

Q&A with Tracy Duru, Owner, Teacher, Student

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
We encourage everyone to develop a regular practice during the introductory month. To that end, students should commit to three or more classes each week to really see the benefits of their practice. It also gives them the opportunity to get to know people in our community better. Our studio is often described like a home away from home: it's peaceful and welcoming for everyone. Our hot room is also a kind of oasis away from life's daily troubles. We open our doors 30 minutes before class to allow for additional quiet time, and we always encourage people to enjoy it by lying down on their mats in peace and quiet after working hard during practice. When newcomers arrive, our team will help them check in during their introduction to the studio. We love to hear about their experience and learn from them about how we can support a regular and long-term practice to better their lives.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
Everyone has their own preference when it comes to music, and the intensity of the practice is always up to the practitioner. On our schedule, we indicate which classes have music so that everyone can choose the classes they'll enjoy. But our community loves our music classes, and we encourage our teachers to play music that they can connect with. We also bring in a musician on Sunday mornings to play live during class. It's an incredible experience.

What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
The Moksha Yoga sequence is a set series of postures practiced in a heated room. When you enter the hot room you set up for the class by lying down on your back. This is our first posture, called savasana, and it's a great opportunity to settle into how you are feeling. You can do this for up to 30 minutes before the class begins. Once the teacher enters they will first guide you through our standing series. This is a cardiovascular set of postures. The focus is on building strength, balance and endurance. To transition to our floor series, we settle back into savasana—another great opportunity to settle in and just relax. The floor series works on strengthening the upper body and abdominal muscles, as well as the joints and the spine. We also do postures to open the hips and the spine. This part of the series relieves tension, treats lower back, knee and hip pain, and improves posture. We finish the class with a final savasana.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We always ask our community for feedback. People often say that we have a welcoming team and great teachers, as well as accessible classes and a clean studio. That's why we're here—to provide the people of Niagara with a new experience in hot yoga.
