Mondo Meatball, the meatball-centric cafe in Chicago's Wicker Park, opened in 2015, but it was founded in 1900. That's the year when owner Dean Casagrande's grandmother brought her family's meatball recipe from Italy to America. Today, her meatball recipe serves as the inspiration behind a menu of meatball subs, sliders, and bowls. But this isn't a strictly Italian operation: Casagrande wanted to tip his hat to meatball traditions around the world, and give customers a chance to combine international flavors however they see fit.
Once they decide on a sandwich, bowl, or salad, diners then pick from six kinds of meatballs, including classic beef, chick'n and bacon, and a gluten-free veggie rendition. From there, chefs layer on a choice of 10 sauces from Thai peanut to Greek tzatziki to Korean barbecue, then add optional sides like mashed potatoes or risotto of the day. From there, the only thing left to do is eat, preferably on the outdoor patio with a craft cocktail in hand.
