Like bumper stickers, customized T-shirts broadcast a message to the world, with cut-off sleeves asserting "I’d rather be wearing a tank top" and tie-dye shirts saying "My other shirt is a kaleidoscope." Design a fashionable message with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get a two-hour T-Shirt Party screen-printing workshop, including all printing materials and two T-shirts, at Montage Clothing Inc. in Farmingdale (a $75 value). Classes are currently scheduled one Thursday a month, including July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17, and December 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Having honed in the craft of producing colorful custom-printed clothing, Montage Clothing Inc.’s savvy shirt-printers hold workshops for artists and fashionistas to learn the craft of printing and create their own wearable art. During the two-hour T-shirt Party workshop, groups of around 15 listen to a brief introduction before grabbing two blank tees and hitting the ink. With hands-on practice paired with enthused instruction, tee-painters sketch their own designs, then stencil shirts with provided funky fonts and edgy images, perhaps a pair of headphones or Jimmy Carter putting a gorilla in a headlock. In between inking tops, workshoppers can imbibe BYO beer and wine while admiring one another’s work.
