Open for more than 20 years, Moody Gardens encompasses a water park, a museum, movie theaters, and a duo of wildlife conservatories, growing from its roots as a horseback-riding therapy program. The Rainforest Pyramid enlightens visitors with up-close-and-personal peeks at more than 1,000 exotic species of flora and fauna. The 10-story triangle tour starts at the edge of the Amazon River exhibit, where playful otters entertain crowds, but do not expect generous tips. From there, guests embark on a top-down tour of the conservatory that starts amid the canopy, an ideal vantage point for spotting birds, sloths, and monkeys. On the descent, the cloud forests hide polychromatic frogs, and the nocturnal exhibit explains the origin of such elusive creatures as the porcupine, african-palm civet, and chupacabra. The rest of the journey explores the ground-based species dwelling in the Asian, Central and South American, and African rainforests.
The 4D Special FX Theater immerses audiences in short films relayed with high-definition digital projection, SFX lighting, and DTS surround sound. Currently showing Dora and Diego’s 4-D Adventure: Catch that Robot Butterfly!, the theater brings far-flung environments to life on the screen with animated explorations of tropical rainforests and arctic landscapes. Smoke, mist, and leg ticklers draw spectators into the journey, while seat buzzers activate to warn of impending pokes from neighbors.
