Out of approximately 25,000 children who grow out of the U.S. foster-care system each year, nearly one-third will not graduate from high school and half are unable to find employment. Young adults emerging from the foster system face a disproportionate risk of homelessness, drug addiction, welfare dependency, and incarceration. More Than Words seeks to prevent young people from entering the cycle of poverty by providing business-management education to youth who are transitioning out of the foster care or court systems, are homeless, or are out of school.
More Than Words employs teams of young adults to operate a community-based bookshop and café in Waltham, equipping youth with valuable employment and leadership skills. Donors stock the shop with gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and videogames, and young workers each spend 20–30 hours per week managing all aspects of the business including training their peers, marketing and promotions, and tracking financial reports. The bookshop operates both a storefront and an online store, ensuring teams get hands-on Internet experience to stay competitive in the modern job market. More Than Words also supports young people in transition with case-management services to help each individual craft a plan for future success. In addition to its Waltham store, More Than Words plans to open a store in Boston this summer, but is still in need of essential supplies before the new location can open for business.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help equip the new More Than Words store location in Boston with the supplies young workers need to run it effectively. If G-Team members raise $585, More Than Words can purchase a laptop for its new Boston bookstore. All additional funds will go toward the purchase of another computer for the new store. G-Team contributors will receive 25% off their next purchase at the More Than Words bookstore in Waltham.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
