While steam engine whistles are recognized by travelers as signal of an impending train arrival, gamblers know the characteristic "whoo-whoo" is also a reliable tell of a bluff during locomotive poker tournaments. The historic Rio Grande Scenic Railroad's last rail spikes struck earth in 1878, completing a path that winds through the Rocky Mountains, ferrying passengers along high altitude tracks flush with abundant wildlife and majestic vistas. Adventure-thirsty passengers board the 100-year-old steam engine at 9 a.m. at the Alamosa station for a meandering ride to the concert venue, accessible only by train or on the back of a robust billy goat. The venue's lineup changes throughout the summer, hosting acts such as the Grammy-nominated Trout Fishing in America, toe-tapping bluegrassers The Rifters, and cowboy singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey. Contented passengers let the wind blow out the melodies still stuck in their heads as the train chugs cheerily back to Alamosa at 5:45 p.m.

Though not included in this Groupon, beverages and snacks can be had on the train at additional cost, and the concert venue offers lunch plates ($12) to replace any electrolytes concert-goers may lose dancing in their seats.

My husband and I have done this before, we truly recommend this. It's so much fun to chat to other train enthusiasts and just meet new folk. Michael Martin Murphy is always so genuine and humble. He is a sheer delight to listen to. This year it was a great pleasure to meet his son Brandon and listen to him play. Murph was a very proud father. If you have not taken one of these trip please stick it on your bucket list.
