What You'll Get
- $130 for a full-day intro to hang-gliding lesson for one ($220 value)
Led by Mountain Wings’ USHPA-certified staff, full-day lessons begin with an informative video. Afterward, the group moves to the outside training areas, where participants try out a stationary simulator and then get acquainted with the gliders themselves. Students learn how to properly pick up and hold a glider, and before long, how to run with it. Once ground training is complete, the whole group heads halfway up a training hill, and 6–10 flights are completed on the first day. After the lesson is over, students receive a memory card with videos of their flights. Through the end of May, classes are 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and include 10-minute breaks for water and rest. Starting in June, classes run 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Whatwas the inspiration to start or run thisbusiness?
I started flying in 1975, moved toCalifornia in 1976 and worked for a major hang glider manufacturer building, designing and test flying gliders. I moved back to NY in 1980 to start my ownschool and flight park. I have been flying hang gliders for over 40 years. I doit for the love of the sport and the satisfaction of seeing the look on thefaces of my students after their first flight and their hugs and jumps for joy,it is very satisfying.
What do youlove most about your job?

The looks of sheer joyand excitement on their faces, the jumps for joy, the hugs I receive along withthe thank you’ s and the big tips. The calls later in the week saying onceagain thank you and how they cannot stop thinking about their flights, how theyare planning their next trip up to Ellenville to do it again.
