Art has often lent itself to repurposing, as seen with duplicated masterpieces gracing the walls of hotel suites and replicas of the statue of David moonlighting as crash-test dummies. Repurpose useless bits into eye-pleasing artwork with today’s Groupon: for $45, you get The Elements of Mosaic workshop at Mozaic Arts, Inc. on Virginia Drive (a $110 value).
With a mosaic-making pedigree stamped in both Mexico and Italy, Mozaic Arts, Inc.'s owner, Michele Petno, leads the way for local artists and creative types to craft works of art in a fun, collaborative atmosphere. In The Elements of Mosaic, students spend the day chipping away at the basics of mosaic creation, including styles, colors, adhesives, and grouts, to assemble unique take-home masterpieces. Materials are provided, but participants may scour local sidewalks, their homes, or unsuspecting neighbors' homes for funky samples to supplement Mozaic’s library of tile and stained glass. Experimentation with nontraditional materials such as wires and decade-old breath mints is heartily endorsed.
Petno has amassed more than 15 years of experience teaching the mosaic arts and frequently travels to Cuernavaca, Mexico, to spread technique awareness and perfect her craft. Workshops last all day, for about seven to eight hours, and the schedule is flexible to accommodate busy lives.
