Chef Michael Psilakis, known as the "godfather of Greek cuisine,” has been nominated for James Beard Awards, has appeared on Food Network’s Best Thing I Ever Ate, and has even cooked for the Obamas at the White House. With such a resume, you might expect him to serve nothing but the fanciest Greek food at the fanciest of Manhattan restaurants. Yet, his MP Tavernas—in locations such as Astoria, Roslyn, Irvington, and Brooklyn—prove he's not interested in following expectations.
For starters, each location updates the vibe of a traditional Greek tavern. The Brooklyn location, for instance, is in a rehabbed warehouse space that's part restaurant, part beer hall with a giant stage and 20-foot movie projector screen. The food is also uninterested in staying true to expected conventions. Chef Psilakis puts contemporary twists on traditional Greek cuisine with dishes such as spicy Greek paella with seafood and merguez sausage, whipped-feta-topped lamb burgers, and ribs accompanied by yogurt and shishito peppers.
