I could have given this wonderful establishment 5 stars except that in many years of extensive travel I have rarely had a "perfect" (5 star experience). The MR's food was outstanding: My wife and I shared a very good, thick lobster bisque "stuffed" w/ many large pieces of claw; I had the seared scallops (huge, tender, tasty sea scallops, perfectly seared, on a bed of parsnip puree with little Brussels Sprouts and crushed bacon -- SUPER!); my wife had a house favorite, the seafood stuffed haddock -- delicious! Our waitress was very efficient and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and homey -- authentic "down east" chic. A local M. D. ("seasoned" citizen like my wife and I) was playing 30's-50's standards & show tunes on a baby grand in the corner. Turns out he sits in and just plays for his own (and our) pleasure. I noted that when we were seated (06:30 P. M. FRI), the almost full dining area's population was almost all folks of our "boomer" generation. When we were leaving (an hour+ later -- we like to take our time at meals) the place had turned and, still almost full, now hosted a younger (20's - 50's) crowd (I suppose 'tis true that older folks like to eat early). Anyway, The MR is great for any generation. The experience was all of what makes Maine so very special: unpretentious charm; genuine warmth and friendliness; seafood done right -- BRAVO Muddy Rudder! We'll be back. Sandra & Bob from CT.

About Muddy Rudder

From shrimp and scallops to crabs and calamari, the culinary team at Muddy Rudder crafts an award-winning menu of classic seafood. They sear salmon with chive oil, fill steamed lobster with seafood stuffing, and drizzle fried clams with rémoulade sauce. Patrons enjoy the oceanic morsels while seated at the linen-draped tables in the dining room—sometimes surrounded by the twinkling of live piano music—or outside on the breeze-kissed deck. Alternatives to seafood include flat bread pizzas, prepped with heirloom tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, and optional add-ons of chicken or lobster. The chef also caters to diners' dietary restrictions with a gluten-free menu stocked with items such as baked haddock and pork tenderloin.
