George Orwell famously wrote about winemaking, "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a grape's face—forever." Stare into the ruddy face of tomorrow with today's Groupon: for $10, you get a wine tasting and tour for four at Muir Murray Estate Winery (a $20 value) in Wolfville.
Muir Murray enlivens palates with premium Nova Scotia wines made from the bounty of its 20-acre vineyard. Guests embark on the tour by wandering through the expansive labyrinth of vineyards overlooking nearby dykes, grapes visiting from the future, and Cape Blomidon. The inner facilities demonstrate the winery’s careful wine-making process that includes grape presses, fermentation vats, and more. Each tour concludes with a complimentary tasting, including the winery's noted Solstice Ice Wine, a dessert wine that pairs well with chocolate and more ice wine.
Muir Murray's wines evoke rich characteristics specific to its grapes' reactions to the regional climate. It is also the first winery in Nova Scotia to open an educational oenology institution, the Annapolis Valley Institute for Education on Wine, which hosts seminars on its grounds for budding vintners.
Muir Murray Estate Winery
Muir Murray Estate Winery owners Jonathan and Lesley Murray use the region’s shorter growing periods to produce a unique blend of grapes rarely found in other climates. Due to their stringent process for selecting the finest grapes, the harvesting season on their 20-acre vineyard yields only about 1.5 tonnes of grapes per acre, which is about 2.5 tonnes less than the industry average. This results in a wine list of refined aromas and signature flavours, and a mouthfeel more pleasurable than either side of a velcro shoe-strap.
