About Murphy's Bleachers
The legacy of Murphy's Bleachers, an unassuming brick building at the corner of Sheffield and Waveland, is almost as old as its neighbor, Wrigley Field. The establishment has been around in some form since the 1930s—once a walk-up hot-dog stand, the bar moved into its current brick-and-mortar location during World War II. The pub changed hands through the next several decades, until the early 1980s when Jim Murphy purchased the building and christened it Murphy’s Bleachers. Under Jim's watch, the small space became a gathering place for locals as well as policemen, firemen, bartenders, visiting concert performers, and even some of the Cubs themselves. It also became more than a bar, often serving as the site for charity and political fundraisers, community meetings, retired batboy support groups, and wedding proposals.
Today, Murphy's Bleachers is defined not just by its close proximity to the ivy-covered ballpark, but by its event spaces, simple pub food, and commitment to craft beer. Plates of pizza, half-pound ground tenderloin burgers, and the restaurant's signature ribs—pork slabs basted in Irish whiskey barbecue sauce—join 17 local craft beers on tap, buckets of local bottled brews, and a range of Irish, Scottish, and American whiskeys. Though cheers erupt from the bar after home-team victories, shouts of glee also accompany open-mic nights, karaoke, bingo games, and a weekly bags tournament.
